Privacy Policy

00 The short version

Roadmeter computes your speed and records your trips on your iPhone. That location and trip data is never transmitted to us and never leaves the device unless you export or share it yourself. We do not operate a server that receives it, and there is no account to attach it to.

The one exception is buying Roadmeter Pro. Purchases are processed by Apple, and subscription status is managed for us by RevenueCat. Neither receives your location or your trips. Section 03 sets out exactly what they do receive.

01 Who we are

Roadmeter is published by [TODO: LEGAL ENTITY] (“we”, “us”). Questions about this policy, or about your data, go to support@pinguwater.com. For the purposes of the UK and EU GDPR, we are the data controller for the limited processing described in section 03.

02 Location data

Roadmeter requests access to your location because a GPS speedometer cannot work without it. Here is precisely what happens to it.

• It is processed on the device. Your iPhone's GPS receiver produces position and speed readings. Roadmeter reads them, smooths them, and displays the result. The readings are held in memory and, during a recorded trip, written to a database stored on the device.
• It is not sent anywhere. Roadmeter has no backend. No location reading, route, or speed value is transmitted to us or to any third party.
• Background access. If you grant “Always” access, Roadmeter continues to read location while a trip is recording and your phone is locked or another app is in front — otherwise the recording would stop mid-drive. Background access is used for nothing else. “While Using the App” access also works; only the recording behaviour differs.
• You can withdraw it. Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Roadmeter. Speed display and trip recording stop working; the rest of the app still opens.

03 What third parties receive

Two companies are involved when you buy Roadmeter Pro. Neither is given your location, your routes, or your trip history.

We do not create an account for you with either company and we do not send them your name, email address, phone number, contacts, or location. RevenueCat processes this data as our processor under a data processing agreement. Their own privacy policy is at revenuecat.com/privacy, and Apple's is at apple.com/legal/privacy.

Both companies are contractually required to provide the same or equal protection of your data as this policy states. We share data with no one else — no analytics provider, no advertising network, no data broker, and no parent, subsidiary, or affiliated entity. There are no other third parties with access to your data.

Our lawful basis under the UK and EU GDPR for this processing is performance of a contract — we cannot deliver a subscription you paid for without verifying that you paid for it.

04 What we do not do

• No analytics SDK, no crash reporting SDK, no attribution SDK.
• No advertising, no ad identifiers, no advertising networks.
• No tracking across other companies' apps or websites. Roadmeter does not present the App Tracking Transparency prompt, because there is nothing to ask you about.
• No selling or sharing of personal information, as those terms are used in the California Consumer Privacy Act. We have never done so and have no mechanism to.
• No profiling and no automated decision-making with legal or similarly significant effects.

05 Data stored on your device

The following is written to your iPhone and stays there: saved trips (route trace, distance, duration, top speed, timestamps), your settings (dial style, units, speed limit presets, calibration offset, alert preferences), and your onboarding state. It is covered by your device's own encryption and by whatever iCloud or local backup you have configured — those backups are between you and Apple.

06 When data does leave your device

Only when you make it. Exporting a trip as GPX or CSV, or sharing a trip card, hands the file to the iOS share sheet and then to whichever destination you choose. At that point the destination's terms apply, not ours. Roadmeter performs no automatic upload, sync, or backup of its own.

07 Retention and deletion

Trips and settings stay on your device until you delete them. You can delete individual trips in the app, and deleting Roadmeter from your iPhone removes all of it at once.

Purchase records held by Apple and RevenueCat are retained under their own schedules — Apple needs them for billing and tax records, RevenueCat for the life of the subscription and a period afterwards. To have RevenueCat's record of your anonymous ID deleted, email us and we will pass the request on; note that deleting it may prevent you from restoring a purchase you have already paid for.

08 Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, port, or restrict the processing of your personal data, and to object to it. Because we hold no personal data that identifies you, most of these rights are satisfied by the device itself: your data is in your hands, and uninstalling erases it.

For the anonymous purchase records described in section 03, contact support@pinguwater.com. You will need to supply the App Store transaction ID so we can identify the record, since we have no other way to find you. If you are in the UK or EU, you also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.

09 Children

Roadmeter is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Roadmeter is a driving instrument intended for adults.

10 International transfers

Apple and RevenueCat are United States companies and the purchase data in section 03 may be processed there. Transfers out of the UK and EEA are covered by the Standard Contractual Clauses in our agreement with RevenueCat, and by Apple's own transfer mechanisms.

11 Changes to this policy

If we change how Roadmeter handles data, we will update this page and move the “Last updated” date at the top. Material changes — for example, adding any service that receives data — will be announced in the app's release notes for that version. This policy always describes the current App Store release.
